As you arrive in Kathmandu, one representative from High Camp Adventure will be waiting at the Tribhuvan International Airport to welcome and transfer you to the designated hotel in Kathmandu. The team representative will be helping you with the hotel check-in formalities. Freshen up, take proper rest and explore the Thamel area, known to be the major hub for foreigners.

On the second day, you are provided with an extra day to prepare yourself for the trek. This day includes a meeting with your Guide and a briefing about the trek. This includes all the safety protocols, what to pack, weather conditions, and last-minute preparations. After your preparation is done, you will get a chance to visit some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu. Some of the major tourist attractions like Swyambunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), Pashupatinath Temple, Boudha Stupa, and Durbar Square. Today, you will be flying from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, which is a short-duration flight taking you to the Terai part of Nepal. Depending on your flight schedule, you will be transferred to the Domestic Terminal Airport. Taking a flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal takes you into the mountains, along with a short trek to Dunai. The flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal is about 45 minutes, depending on the weather conditions; however, the stunning views of the surrounding hills and mountains make your journey full of unforgettable memories. As you land in Juphal, you will take some time to rest and begin your trek to Dunai, a small, vibrant village where you can see various options of guest houses and tea houses. Trekking from Ringo to Phoksundo Lake mainly includes a steep descent with some challenging scenic routes. On this exciting and challenging day, you make your way from Phoksundo Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa via Kang La pass. Today’s journey is long and strenuous, offering you the most breathtaking views of the high Himalayas. As you leave Phoksundo Bhanjyag, your route starts with steep ascents and rocky paths, where you pass through a high-altitude pass called the Kang La Pass. This high-altitude pass provides you with stunning panoramic views of the nearby mountains and valleys. The final push climb to the top will be tough, but once you reach the summit, it will be worth it, with magnificent views of snow-capped peaks like Kanjiroba Himal and Dhaulagiri.  Take some time to click photos, take a rest, and be mindful of altitude sickness. After spending some time at the pass, you begin your descent towards Shey Gompa, a remote Buddhist monastery surrounded by stunning landscapes. The descent is less challenging but still requires attention because of the rocky terrain. The crossing of Kang La Pass is physically demanding as well as rewarding; therefore, acclimatization with maintaining your walking pace of walk is crucial.

Today’s journey from Tokyu to Dho Tarap is more relaxed and easier in comparison to previous days. Trekking from Tokyu to Dho Tarap guides you through winding paths, grassy fields, and light forests. Along the trek, you can encounter some rocky and dry sections with natural vegetation and small streams. As you descend, the surroundings will become greener, where you can experience breathtaking vistas of the surrounding valleys and mountains, with opportunities to enjoy the serenity and beauty of the remote region of Dolpo. Arriving at Dho Tarap, an important settlement area that offers you a perfect glimpse into the traditional Tibetan lifestyle. Dho Tarap serves as a home to the Tibetan Buddhist and Bonpo traditions (ancient Tibetan religion), also called Bonpos. You will find several small monasteries and spiritual sites. Take adequate rest and explore the village along with interacting with the locals in the peaceful atmosphere of Dho Tarap.

On this day, you will be provided with a well-deserved rest at Dho Tarap, which offers an excellent opportunity to acclimatize, relax, and explore the nearby areas. Make sure to take a short walk around the village, which gives you a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the people in the remote Dolpo region. With strong Tibetan influence, the area features a mix of Buddhist and Bonpo cultures in the architecture and everyday life. Spend some time wandering around, exploring the traditional houses, and observing the lifestyle of the villagers. Trekking from Dho Tarap to Tarap Khola is a moderate descent that takes you through a variety of terrains, starting with grassy meadows and rocky paths, opening into open vegetation near the Tarap River. As you descend in altitude, you will notice the terrain gradually becomes more fertile and green. The route takes you along the Tarap River, which will guide you through a series of gorges and dense forest sections. The landscape changes from the high-altitude environment of Dolpo to a more lush area with refreshing changes in the natural scenery. As you approach Khani Gaon, a vibrant traditional Tibetan village, where more of the people are engaged in farming and herding, and maintain a simple lifestyle. Tarakot serves as an important administrative and trade center in the Dolpo region, which is located at the junction of the Tarap River and Bargung Khola, offering you a scenic view of the mountains. On this day, you will have a free day in Kathmandu. This day is offered to you as during unfavorable seasons, the flight from Nepalgunj to Kathmandu is usually delayed. Today you make your visit to some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites inside Kathmandu Valley. After your morning breakfast, you will be greeted by our tour guide, who will be taking you to the major tourist spots inside Kathmandu Valley. You will be starting your Sightseeing tour with a visit to Swyambhunath Stupa, which is also known as the Monkey Temple. Then you head towards Pashupatinath Temple, Boudha Stupa, and Durbar Square, which offer you in-depth knowledge about the history and culture of Nepal. After enjoying today’s tour, you will be dropped off at your hotel, where High Camp Adventure and its team have arranged a Farewell Dinner for trekkers.

Accommodations and Meals 

During your Upper Dolpo Trek, accommodations are offered to include a 2/ 3-star hotel in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj. Similarly, as you embark on the trek, accommodations provided are a basic facility of the tea house and some tented camps at higher elevations. You are provided with an option to upgrade your accommodations during your stay in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, however, the cost will not be included in the package. The lodging includes some cozy rooms, and a shared washroom as you reach higher. Therefore, the higher you elevate the more basic the amenities get, so don’t expect facilities as per your needs and preferences. All the tea houses and campsites accommodated for you are on a twin-sharing basis unless you are from a different gender. 

Throughout the trek, meals offered include breakfast, lunch, and dinner which are more delicious with more nutrients. All these meals are prepared by the locals of the tea house owners and are freshly made with local ingredients, providing you with more proteins for your body to generate more stamina during the trek. Getting meals as per your needs is only possible at lower altitudes; therefore, as you trek higher, getting meals to your requirements is not possible. You are offered typical Nepali foods, as well as continental, Italian, Indian, and Tibetan. Make sure to try the local Nepali cuisines such as Dal Bhat, MoMo, Thupka, Chowmein, Dhedo, and many more items. However, during your stay in Kathmandu and Nepalgunj, only breakfast is provided, so trekkers should manage their major meals by themselves. 

Best Season 

Trekking the Upper Dolpo is considered to be safe during the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November), as at this time you will be rewarded with clear skies, pleasant weather, and moderate temperatures. Here are some of the advantages of making your ascent during these seasons. 

  • Spring (March to May): Spring usually ranges from March to May, which is considered to be a perfect time to embark on the Upper Dolpo Trek. Elevating at this time, offers you pleasant weather, moderate temperature, and clear skies, rewarding you with clear views of the snow-capped peaks and panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. During this season, you can see vibrant and dense rhododendron forests, providing you with great visibility of the surrounding valleys.
  • Autumn (September to November): The Autumn season is a great time to embark on the Upper Dolpo journey, as the temperature is moderate with daytime being hot and night a bit colder than the Spring. Autumn offers you clear skies, crisp air, and pleasant weather, making Autumn the most preferred time to trek. During this time, the trail is also well-managed, with routes and accommodations being packed by trekkers from all around the world.
  • Monsoon (June to August): During Monsoon, the Upper Dolpo region is mostly affected by frequent rainfall, which hampers the trail conditions, making it more slippery and increasing the risk of landslides. Ascending at this time is a bit challenging as there is less visibility, with limited tea houses being operated on your trekking route. You can see the trail is almost empty, with no proper views of the mountains because of heavy clouds. Therefore, Monsoon is not an ideal time to make your ascent to the Dolpo region, because of harsh weather conditions.
  • Winter (December to February): The Upper Dolpo experiences extremely colder temperatures in the time of Winter, therefore, it is not advisable to make your ascend. Most of the trekking route is covered by heavy snow, and most of the accommodations are closed due to harsh weather conditions. Making your ascend at this time is risky with challenging trail conditions. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid the winter seasons due to the high risk and other difficulties that arise at this time.

Trekkers waiting to embark on the Upper Dolpo Trek are required to obtain special permits along with valid documents. Below are some of the permits trekkers need to make their ascend to the Upper Dolpo region of Nepal. 

Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit: Trekkers wanting to make their ascend to the Upper Dolpo region of Nepal must require the Upper Dolpo Restricted Area Permit, as this permit is important to explore some of the restricted areas. Without this permit, you are not allowed to make your journey in the Dolpo region. Therefore, for an easy and comfortable journey, make sure to obtain this permit. This National Park is renowned for its stunning landscapes, including the Shey Phoksundo Lake, one of the deepest lakes in Nepal. Trekkers can easily obtain this permit from the National Tourism Board (NTB) in Kathmandu, where you can easily apply for the permit.
