On the second day, you take the next flight to Jumla, where your trekking adventure starts with a gradual altitude gain through beautiful villages and dense forests, where you get a chance to engage with the area's locals. You get a proper idea and experience of life at higher elevations. Along the way, you pass through several settlement areas where people belong to different ethnic groups as well as getting a chance to observe how is agriculture done at elevated areas. The final destination of the journey is to reach Rara Lake, located at an elevation of 2,900 meters above sea level, which is surrounded by mountains and dense forests. The views from the Lake are breathtaking with a peaceful environment. You will be passing through the Rara National Park which is also considered the home of wildlife, adding attractiveness to the trek with chances to witness musk deer, Himalayan deer, and various kinds of bird species.

The trek usually takes around 15 to 16 days, depending on the trail conditions along with the time needed for trekkers to acclimatize and spend at Rara Lake. The best time for this trek is during the Spring (March to May) and Autumn (September to November), as navigating during these seasons offers you pleasant weather and moderate temperatures, which makes your journey easy and comfortable. As per trekkers, Winter and Monsoon seasons are considered less suitable due to harsh weather and challenging trail conditions. The hike is moderately challenging, however, some sections of the trail include steep slopes and rough terrain. Stunning scenery and the opportunity to explore the remote areas provide you with unforgettable memories for a lifetime. Therefore, the Rara Lake trek is ideal for those trekkers wanting a less-crowded trekking destination in Nepal.

Off-Beaten Trekking Trail in Nepal

Rara Lake Trek is considered one of the Off-Beaten trekking trails in Nepal for several reasons. Some of the reasons are mentioned below.

  1. Remote Location: The Rara Lake is situated in the northwest part of the Mugu district in Nepal which is far away from some popular trekking destinations such as Annapurna, Everest, and Langtang. Therefore, this remote location is less accessible and less visited by trekkers. However, Rara Lake is considered to be the main attraction, which offers you crystal-clear, deep blue water that is surrounded by snow-capped mountains.
  2. Limited Infrastructure: Unlike other popular trekking routes in Nepal, such as Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp, the Rara Lake trekking route has limited infrastructure, although the facility provided is worth it. However, the route is less managed with a lack of paved roads. Therefore, this is the reason which makes the Rara Lake trek an Off-Beaten trekking route in Nepal.
  3. Fewer Trekkers: Hiking in the Rara Lake is less commercialized with fewer trekkers coming in the region to trek. However, the trek allows visitors to experience a more peaceful and pure atmosphere without the trail being packed with trekkers, as you can fully engage yourself in the trek. You can get an opportunity to connect with nature.
  4. Challenging Access: Reaching Rara Lake requires several flights to be changed which includes a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalganj followed by a short flight to Jumla. And then finally, your trek starts from Jumla, through rugged terrain and remote areas.
  5. Lack of Marketing and Government Promotion: In comparison to other trekking routes in Nepal like the Everest and Annapurna regions, they are mainly promoted by the Government. Therefore, Rara Lake has not been seen to have the same level of investment and promotion by the Government authorities. This leads to fewer international visitors. However, Rara Lake is one of the best destinations to trek and explore the remote location of Nepal, as it offers you a well-deserved experience of life at a higher altitude.

Challenges and Rewards of Rara Lake Trek

The Rara Lake Trek is moderately challenging in terms of difficulty, where the terrain can be tough with steep ascents and descents. The trek includes passing through some of the remote locations with limited access to accommodations, therefore, you must be prepared for basic amenities. However, the Rare Lake Trek is the best choice for trekkers as they get a chance to immerse themselves in the untouched beauty of natural landscapes, with a peaceful environment along with an opportunity to engage with the locals and get an experience of their culture and traditions.

Is the Rara Lake Trek worth the visit despite being an off-beaten path destination in Nepal?

Undoubtedly! The Rara Lake Trek is worth visiting, especially for those looking for a more tranquil and genuine Nepalese experience. As an off-the-beaten-path destination, the Rara Lake trek provides you with an opportunity to explore some of Nepal’s impressive natural beauty. The Lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and towering peaks which is ideal for trekkers, seeking a less crowded trekking route. The combination of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural immersion makes the trek a truly unique and rewarding experience for those seeking something different from usual routes. Get a chance to enjoy the breathtaking views along with exploring the traditional village as well as interacting with local communities.

Why is Rara Lake Trek a Restricted Area In Nepal?

Rara Lake, situated in the Mugu District of Nepal, is classified as a restricted area, although the reason is not due to its position in the Mugu District. The major reason Rara Lake is a restricted area is because of its border near China (Tibet), which puts the area under high security. The area was declared a Restricted area by the Nepalese Government to control and monitor all the activities near the International border.

Rara National Park is a protected area with a significant environment and home to many wildlife species. The place is also considered to be a restricted area as this National Park protects the ecosystem, wildlife, and indigenous communities living in the area. Therefore, Mugu District is not entirely a restricted area, the Rara Lake is marked as a restricted area mainly to ensure safety, protect nature, and preserve the local traditions.
