Best Seasons to Trek

For a safe and hassle-free experience in the Dolpo region of Nepal, trekkers must be aware of the season they choose to make their way to higher elevations. Here are some of the best times to make your ascend to the Dolpo region. Trekking in these times offers you well-maintained trail conditions, and chances to witness spectacular vistas.

  • Spring (March to May): Spring is a perfect time for Lower Dolpo Trekking, as during this time, trekkers will be rewarded with pleasant weather and moderate temperatures. The day is usually sunny with mild temperatures, making it comfortable to trek and ascend to higher altitudes. During this time, you can witness vibrant rhododendron forests, with clear skies and good visibility of the surrounding mountains.
  • Autumn (September to November): Autumn (September to November) is another great time to make your ascent to higher altitudes such as the Dolpo region. During this time, the temperature is a bit colder than the Spring season. Clear skies, crisp air, and pleasant weather make Autumn the most preferred time for trekking. The trail is well-maintained, with routes packed with trekkers. Ascending during this time, the lodges and tea houses are mostly packed with trekkers.
  • Monsoon (June to August): During the monsoon, the Dolpo region experiences significant rainfall, which increases the risk of landslides, making the trek difficult to ascend. The trail becomes more slippery because of frequent rainfall, which makes the visibility less. There may be limited tea houses being operated during the monsoon seasons, as only a few trekkers make their ascend at this time. Therefore, Monsoon is not an ideal time to trek due to harsh weather conditions and high risks.
  • Winter (December to February): The Dolpo region experiences extremely cold temperatures, especially at higher elevations. As you ascend, there is a high chance of sudden temperature drops below freezing point, making the trek challenging and dangerous during the Winter season. The route is mostly blocked by heavy snowfall, as well as tea houses and other accommodations being closed due to harsh weather conditions and very few trekkers. It is advisable to avoid the winter seasons for trekking in Lower Dolpo due to weather challenges, risks, and other difficulties.
